Lake Shore & Nisswa Trail

Project Overview

The Cities of Lake Shore and Nisswa are constructing a 10-foot-wide bituminous trail that will begin at the intersection of CSAH 77 and CSAH 78 in Lake Shore. It will then head east along the north right-of-way of CSAH 77  to Lower Roy Lake Road (LRLR). The trail will continue north on LRLR to the intersection of Hazelwood Drive. It will continue north on Hazelwood Drive and connect to the Nisswa Lake Public Water Access, travel through a tunnel under TH 371, and connect with the Paul Bunyan Trail in Nisswa. Please see the map below for an overview.

Project Updates

October 5, 2023

The contractor has been focusing on the Nisswa portion of the trail to complete the final items including fencing, signing, cleanup and is getting close to completion. For the Lake Shore portion we are working out some details for the boardwalks; one across from Bar Harbor and two small ones on either side of the bridge walkway. This has added an unavoidable delay and we anticipate the helical anchors (which hold up the boardwalk) to be installed the week of October 16th.  There is also an additional retaining wall being installed by the Narrows that is scheduled for the week of October 9th.

This section of the trail has areas between the boardwalks and bridge that are to be constructed after the boardwalk and retaining wall are completed. This will push construction into November with signs and fencing. Clean up will follow.

The Nisswa portion of the trail is mostly complete. Please be aware of your surroundings while the contractor finishes up this portion of the trail. And as a reminder, please reduce your speed along the trail route, safety for you and the construction workers is our number one concern.

As always, please contact the project manager with any questions or concerns.

September 7, 2023

The contractor has been focusing on the Nisswa portion of the trail to complete the final items including fencing, signing, and cleanup. This section of the trail is close to being completed except for the items listed above. Please be aware if  using the trail, the contractor is still working in various locations and if encountered use caution when approaching them.

Lake Shore trail construction was waiting on utilities to be relocated, with the arrival of the bridge material, work has begun on the bridge walkway and boardwalk along CSAH 77. As this section is completed the contractor will connect the trail to these sections. There are many breaks in the trail along CSAH 77 such as the bridge and boardwalks, we would ask that trail users stay off the trail in this section until all the connections are made and amenities are completed.

Please contact the project manager with any questions or concerns.

And as a reminder, please reduce your speed along the trail route, safety for you and the construction workers is our number one concern.

August 2, 2023

As the private utilities complete their relocations the contractor will return to resume construction. The schedule includes finish grading Hazelwood Drive and Lakeshore for curb and gutter installation. Then they will pour curb and gutter, pedestrian ramps, pave the Hazelwood Drive section of trail, and start restoration.

Please contact the project manager with any questions or concerns.

As a reminder, please reduce your speed along the trail route, safety for you and the construction workers is our number one concern.

July 17, 2023

Construction continues and it has been spotty as the contractor is waiting on private utilities to complete their relocations. They paved the trail from CSAH  77 on the west side of Lower Roy Lake Road and stopped at the crossing by the golf course. Restoration will continue in areas when the trail becomes paved. The contractor will continue to monitor the small private utility relocations and adjust the schedule as needed.

Please contact the project manager with any questions or concerns. And as a reminder, please reduce your speed along the trail route, safety for you and the construction workers is our number one concern.

June 29, 2023

Construction continues as we approach the holiday weekend. The contractor will be excavating along parts of CSAH 77 and repairing erosion control measures due to rain. The schedule for after the holiday will be storm sewer installation along Hazelwood Drive and continued work along Lower Roy Lake Road. This will include paving the trail from CSAH 77 to the golf course where the trail switches sides of the road.  Please contact the project manager with any questions or concerns. And as a reminder, please reduce your speed along the trail route, safety for you and the construction workers is our number one concern.

June 16, 2023

Construction continues in preparation for trail bituminous surfacing scheduled for Wednesday June 21, 2023. During the trail paving there will be multiple trucks hauling hot mix and paving equipment along the route, please be aware of the additional congestion along Hazelwood Drive and Lower Roy Lake Road. After the paving is complete there will be additional tasks that will need to be completed including signing, striping, and restoration. Please contact the project manager with any questions or concerns.

And as a reminder, please reduce your speed along the trail route, safety for you and the construction workers is our number one concern.

May 24, 2023

Construction continues with the topsoil excavation and utility relocations. For the upcoming holiday the contractor will be finished working by noon on Friday. Next week after the holiday they will continue with top soil excavation, utility relocations along with starting excavation on the trail. Trail excavation was planned to start on Hazelwood Drive but has changed to start on Lower Roy Lake Road to complete the utility relocations along the proposed trail route. Please reduce your speed along these areas of construction and be prepared to stop for construction traffic. Flag persons will be there to direct single lane traffic through the work zone.

May 12, 2023

Construction is on the way, the contractor has cleared the stumps, removals are taking place, and mailboxes will be relocated permanently to the other side of the street along Hazelwood Drive and Lower Roy Lake Road for safety considerations with the trail along the route. Mailboxes that do not presently have “swing away” type posts will be changed out per city mailbox policy. As a reminder on May 15th CSAH 77 will be closed at Nokomis Ave. and the detour will be put in place until July 14th. As trail construction takes place along Lower Roy Lake Road and Hazelwood Drive please be aware of the construction workers, pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicle traffic along the road during this period, everyone wants to get home safely.

April 27, 2023

We held the preconstruction meeting for the Gull Lake Trail – Phase 4 project on 4/25/2023 with the General Contractor, Sub-Contractors, City Staff from both cities. The contractor has started clearing the trees and stumps from along the trail route and will begin removals of the driveway pavement, fences, mailboxes, concrete driveway pavement and other miscellaneous items. Work will begin with some storm sewer improvements along CSAH 77, and excavation of the trail will start at the DNR landing on Hazelwood Drive and continue to Lower Roy Lake Road.

March 7, 2023

The project was let on February 23, 2023, with Anderson Brothers Construction having the lowest bid at $2,784,590.05. Next we will be scheduling a preconstruction conference to review the project with the contractor and their proposed schedule for construction. After the preconstruction conference we will update this site with key tasks including where the contractor proposes to begin construction. The contractor’s first milestone will be to have all trees along the site that are to be cut down completed by March 31, 2023.
