A major expansion is underway at the UA Local 11 Plumbers & Pipefitters training facility in Duluth—one that will significantly enhance hands-on learning opportunities for the next generation of skilled tradespeople.
Widseth is providing architectural and engineering services for the 27,000-square-foot, $10 million addition. Designed to support continued program growth, the expansion will help accommodate increasing enrollment while elevating the quality and scope of training.
Built for Hands-On Learning
At the core of the addition is a strong emphasis on experiential training. Key features include:
- An indoor rigging structure for advanced instruction
- An underground training workshop—a dedicated pit where students can gain real-world experience with below-grade plumbing systems
- Expanded welding capabilities, increasing booths from 15 to 32
Additional spaces include an HVAC lab, plumbing lab, classrooms, a union hall, and a mechanical room where equipment is displayed for educational purposes.

From Vision to Construction
Widseth’s involvement began with a Building Assessment and Feasibility Study, helping the owner evaluate options including relocation, new construction, or expanding the existing facility. From there, the project progressed through design, construction documents, bidding, and is now in the construction administration phase.
Enhancing the Existing Facility and Site
In addition to the new construction, renovations to the existing building will improve both functionality and comfort. Updates include upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, along with new office space, a conference room, and a breakroom. Despite a previously constrained site with limited parking, the redesigned layout will increase parking capacity for instructors, union members, and apprentices. The site will also feature an underground rainwater filtration system, reinforcing the project’s commitment to practical, real-world infrastructure solutions.
Looking Ahead
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once finished, the expanded facility will provide a modern, flexible environment that supports the continued growth of UA Local 11’s training program—and helps ensure a strong future for the plumbing and pipefitting trades in the region.
