Work continues to progress on Essentia Health’s Orthopedic Center in Baxter, with major site improvements helping transform the former big box property into a welcoming healthcare destination.
Because the property was originally developed for retail use, the existing layout presented both challenges and opportunities for the design team. Jeremy Schwarze, part of Widseth’s civil engineering team, approached the project with a fresh perspective—rethinking how car and foot traffic should move through the site.
Working closely with Essentia Health and the City of Baxter’s planning and engineering staff, the main entrance, parking lot, and patient drop-off areas were redesigned to improve traffic flow and safety. Special consideration was given to how vehicles would move between the facility, nearby businesses, and surrounding intersections to create a seamless experience.
Landscape enhancements and additional green space are helping soften the site while creating a more welcoming environment. An existing loading dock has also been repurposed into functional new amenities.
Construction thus far has included removing existing pavement, reconstructing underground utilities, and building new curb and gutter systems. With spring construction now underway, the team is looking ahead to completing the remaining exterior work and continuing progress toward a grand opening in the fall. Stay tuned for more updates as progress continues.
