A multi-year wastewater infrastructure project is underway at the Alexandria Lake Area Sanitary District (ALASD), with approximately $80 million in improvements planned to modernize treatment processes and infrastructure. The district’s collection system covers more than 100 square miles and includes more than 200 pump stations, making it a complex system to manage and maintain.

The project is one of the largest infrastructure efforts in ALASD’s history. The upgrades are designed to support wastewater treatment in the Alexandria area for decades to come. A key component of the project is the addition of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) treatment system. The advanced treatment process uses ultrafine membranes along with biological treatment to remove solids and contaminants from wastewater.

Widseth is part of the project team alongside Brown and Caldwell, the lead engineering firm, and Rice Lake Construction. Widseth is providing civil engineering, construction management, and architectural services for the project.

Our team’s familiarity with ALASD’s extensive collection system and pump station network also brings valuable local knowledge to the project. Widseth has worked with ALASD on its civil infrastructure for many years, providing an understanding of the system that can inform both large-scale improvements and ongoing infrastructure needs.

Construction is currently underway, with work progressing on the biological nutrient removal tanks, aeration basins, and membrane bioreactor building. The project is expected to continue through a three-year construction schedule.
