Maintenance Facilities that Work: Designing for Function & Longevity While Controlling Costs

From plowing snow to keeping infrastructure in top condition, maintenance facilities are where essential local services take shape and stay on track. These buildings must support a wide range of functions, serve diverse teams, and stand up to heavy use, year after year. At Widseth, we specialize in designing municipal maintenance facilities that deliver function, longevity, and cost efficiency.

Purpose-Driven Design

Every successful facility starts with understanding how it will be used. Whether it’s road maintenance, parks, utilities, or fleet management, we work closely with public works staff to design spaces that support safe, efficient, and practical workflows. Our designs consider circulation for large equipment, covered storage needs, secure access, and workspaces that reflect how staff use the facility day-to-day.

The Roseau County Maintenance Facility (pictured above) features public works offices, three vehicle maintenance bays, a wash bay, and a vehicle storage area. Widseth provided comprehensive design services for the project, including architecture; structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering; furniture planning, and full site design, encompassing civil engineering, surveying, and landscape architecture.

Built for the Long Haul

Public budgets need facilities that last. We prioritize durable materials, resilient systems, and weather-ready design, keeping the Midwest’s snow, ice, and freeze-thaw cycles in mind. A thoughtful structural and mechanical design can significantly reduce long-term repair and replacement costs. We work with our clients to select solutions that reduce future maintenance needs and extend the life of the building.

Designed with Stewardship in Mind

We understand that cities and counties must be good stewards of taxpayer dollars. By integrating flexible spaces, energy-efficient systems, and low-maintenance materials, we help clients make the most of their investment upfront and over the lifetime of the facility. Our in-house team of engineers and architects work together to streamline the design process and avoid costly surprises later.

A well-designed maintenance facility plays a vital role in supporting essential public services. Our team is dedicated to delivering designs that are efficient, resilient, and built to last.
