The City of Paynesville is taking meaningful steps toward building a new public library—an effort years in the making. City leaders and library advocates have carefully studied the need for a new facility, driven by the limitations of the current space and a vision for better serving the community into the future.

The proposed library addresses the need for a larger, more modern facility while maintaining a design that feels at home in Paynesville. Blending contemporary elements with traditional character, the building is thoughtfully designed to complement the surrounding community.

At just under 6,000 square feet, the library will offer flexible, multi-use spaces to serve a wide range of needs. Plans include a multi-purpose meeting room for small events, dedicated areas for teens, adults, and children, two study rooms, a quiet room, a teleconference room, and staff office and workspaces. The layout also allows for after-hours access to the meeting room and restrooms, increasing convenience for community events. Off-street parking was a key priority, improving safety for families loading and unloading materials.

Widseth supported the project by developing a preliminary design and providing a cost estimate of approximately $4 million, helping the city establish a clear fundraising goal. An ad hoc library committee is now working to secure donations and pursue state and federal grant opportunities.

“Widseth has been fabulous,” said ad hoc library committee member Steve Peterson. “Hooking up with them last summer has gotten us to a really good design—with input from everyone—and a solid cost estimate.”
