Construction is officially underway on the Brainerd Fire Department remodel, a project designed to enhance firefighter health and wellness, improve operational efficiency, and support the recruitment and retention of the department’s dedicated team members.
The project originated from a facility study completed in 2018 by Widseth. While the study initially identified exterior maintenance needs and operational challenges, it also highlighted opportunities to modernize the facility and better support the firefighters who serve the Brainerd community.
According to Fire Chief Tim Holmes, three primary goals have guided the project from the beginning: firefighter health and wellness, workflow efficiency, and recruitment and retention.
Prioritizing Firefighter Health and Wellness
One of the most significant improvements addresses a growing concern for exposure to carcinogens.
Historically, firefighters’ turnout gear was stored on the apparatus floor alongside fire trucks. While common in older stations, this arrangement can expose gear to vehicle exhaust and other contaminants. The remodel will create a dedicated turnout gear room where equipment can be stored in a controlled environment, helping reduce exposure to harmful substances.
Additional improvements include enhanced locker room facilities, allowing firefighters to change into clean clothing after responding to incidents, and a dedicated fitness area to support physical health.

Improving Workflow and Emergency Response
The remodel also focuses on creating a more efficient facility that supports the department’s operations.
New flexible workspaces will provide firefighters with a place to work remotely while remaining available to respond to emergency calls. Whether completing administrative tasks, training, or transitioning between assignments, firefighters will have access to dedicated work areas within the station.
By creating a more functional environment, the department can improve daily workflows while potentially reducing response times when personnel are already on-site.
Supporting Recruitment and Retention
Across the country, fire departments continue to face challenges attracting and retaining qualified personnel. Chief Holmes believes the station environment plays an important role in addressing those challenges.
Modern, functional facilities demonstrate an investment in the people who serve the community. When firefighters feel supported and take pride in their workplace, departments are better positioned to attract new members and retain experienced personnel.
The remodel represents more than a building improvement—it is an investment in the firefighters who protect Brainerd and the surrounding area.

A Collaborative Process
Since completing the initial facility study, Widseth has worked closely with the Brainerd Fire Department to develop solutions that reflect the department’s operational needs and long-term goals.
Chief Holmes noted that the planning and design process has been collaborative and transparent. By listening to those who use the facility every day, the project team has been able to create a design that supports both current operations and future growth.
Looking Ahead
As construction progresses, excitement continues to build among firefighters and community members alike. Residents have already noticed the activity at the station and are eager to see the finished product take shape.
When complete, the remodeled facility will provide a healthier, more efficient, and more welcoming environment for firefighters while strengthening the department’s ability to serve the community for years to come.
For the Brainerd Fire Department, this project is about much more than a building. It’s about investing in the people who answer the call when their community needs them most.
